A Personal Journey to Better Sleep
How a personal struggle inspired NightCaps.
I'm Andy Kerr, the creator of NightCaps, and I was a lifelong insomniac.
Sleep should be easy. You are tired, so you lie down, close your eyes and wake up sharp and full of energy. That's how it's supposed to work. But for many of us, including my son and I, it's wasn't that easy.
For my son it all started when he was diagnosed with ADHD in high school. The recommendation? Medication and therapy. Indefinitely. As a professional problem-solver, I thought, "How can I help?"
So I dug deep and learned that there were four areas that might: sleep, diet, activity, and mindfulness. For my son and I three were covered. But sleep? That was the missing piece and one that I had also struggled with for years, and come to accept would always be a problem. Funnily enough both of us had trouble sleeping due to brains that would spin at night. His because of his neuro diversity and mine due to work and life stress.
I then discovered something shocking: sleep deprivation mimics ADHD symptoms, and the mission became clear: help my son—and men like me—get the restorative sleep we deserve. It's funny how we are willing to simply live with issues like this, but when it becomes a problem for someone we love, we jump into action.
As a problem solver, you always start with the end in mind. I become focused on getting both us to a point where we would wake up mentally sharp and energetic.
So I studied and researched the physical reasons that minds spin at night, and the neuro chemistry of brains related to sleep, and NightCaps as a supplement was born.
But I knew a supplement wouldn't work alone, because sabotaging our own sleep is easy. So I delved into research on how our daily actions impact our ability to sleep, and concluded that a complete system would need to be the solution—natural supplements paired with a habit awareness program.
i realized that it was necessary to help people be aware that the actions they take every day can help or sabotage their sleep, and the NightCaps daily survey was born. A few questions sent out each morning to keep in mind throughout the day.
So the NightCaps Sleep System came to life, and because I believe everyone deserves to develop the Keystone habit of sleeping well, I hope that you try it and join me in being mentally sharp and physically energized each day.
Here's to better nights and brighter days.
